OUR STORY

WHERE WE STARTED

AltaML was co-founded in Edmonton in 2018 by Nicole and  Cory Janssen. AltaML was launched with a clear view: most artificial intelligence (AI) initiatives fail at the gap between a working model and a working solution, and closing that gap requires a different kind of company focused on applied AI, not just research.

Edmonton gave AltaML the right foundation. The University of Alberta, ranked among the top AI and ML research institutions in the world, sits at the center of one of Canada's most established AI talent clusters. AltaML has since grown to more than 100 AI and industry experts, serving leading clients in industries from the federal government to construction, energy, and more, with offices in Edmonton, Calgary, Toronto, and Waterloo.

WHAT WE BELIEVE

rocket
AI Has a Production Problem
Most enterprise AI projects never make it out of the pilot stage. Getting from a working model to a working solution in a real organization with real data is a different problem from what most AI vendors solve. That's the problem AltaML was built for.
hands-on-learning
Elevating Human Potential
We put better tools in the hands of people who already know their work, so they can do more of what needs them. We measure success by what's running in production.
Responsible-AI
Building AI That Holds Up
Auditable outputs. Explainable decisions. Data that stays in your environment. And systems your teams will actually use,  because an AI solution no one trusts won't get used, no matter how well the model performs.

HOW WE WORK

Every engagement follows the same six-phase methodology, from the first conversation to a solution that runs in production.
1
Ideate
Surface the highest-value use cases.
2
Assess Feasibility
Review technical and ROI viability before committing.
3
Experiment
Build a working proof of concept on real data.
4
Pilot
Iterate rapidly, with your team in the loop.
5
Deploy
 Launch to production.
6
Monitor and Evolve
Maintain and improve over time.

THE FRAMEWORK FOR RESPONSIBLE AI

RESPONSIBLE AI IN PRACTICE

All of our work prioritizes ethical considerations, fairness, transparency, and accountability throughout the AI development and deployment life cycle.
82% of businesses believe they practice RAI. Only 52% actually do.
1. Inclusivity
Inclusivity
Built for the full range of people the system will touch, with their needs accounted for from day one.
2. Fairness
Fairness
Ensuring all users are treated ethically and without bias, which requires deliberate choices right from the start of every project.
3. Transparency
Transparency
Every solution is clear about where AI is involved and can explain the reasoning behind its outputs.
4. Accountability
Accountability
Every AI-assisted decision has a clear owner, so when the system makes a mistake, there's someone responsible for fixing it.
5. Safety & Security
Safety & Security
Built to perform reliably once deployed and designed to resist manipulation in the environments where it runs.
6. Privacy & Data Protection
Privacy & Data Protection
Data ingested and generated by the system is fully compliant with privacy requirements, with protection built in at every stage.
7. Awareness & Empowerment
Awareness & Empowerment
Everyone involved with an AI system should understand how it works and be able to raise concerns when something seems wrong.
